Correct ETC Usage

1. Please confirm the ETC card expiry date.

As with credit cards, ETC cards also have an expiry date. Please be careful, as you cannot use expired cards.

2. Be careful not to forget to insert the ETC card.

Tollgate bars will not open if you forget to insert the card or if it is expired.
An ETC Card not Inserted Warning System is operating on expressways. Before using, please confirm the ETC card is properly inserted in the in-vehicle equipment and operating normally.

3. Pay attention to signals on ETC gates and signboards.

Please check if the signal is "red" before entering ETC lanes. If it is "red" either vehicles with or without ETC can pass. In that case, never enter the lane as tollgate staff may be crossing.

4. Please drive carefully and below 20 km per hour in ETC lanes.

Please slow down to below 20 km per hour before entering the ETC lane and pass through after the bar opens. Please leave enough distance from other vehicles and drive safely.

5. Pay particular attention when using motorcycles.

Tollgate barriers will not open if you forget to insert the card or if it is expired.
Please slow down to below 20 km per hour before entering the ETC lane and pass through after the bar opens. Please leave enough distance from other vehicles and drive safely.

6. If you could not use ETC correctly at an entrance, please use the "General lane" at an exit.

If you could not use ETC correctly at an entrance, please use the "General lane" at an exit.
If the in-vehicle ETC equipment notifies an error after the tollgate bar has opened and you have passed through, please use a "General lane" with staff in attendance instead of an ETC lane at an exit tollgate.

  • * An error occurs when the entrance information cannot be written correctly to the ETC card from the in-vehicle equipment. [Notification Example] "Please check the card" "Beep-Beep (abnormal sound)"
  • * To have ETC Time-restricted Discounts applied, please let the exit tollgate staff know that you "could not use ETC at the entrance".

7. Please be careful if the bar does not open at the exit.

Never back up, you may bump into the following cars. If the bar does not open, please contact staff using the interphone located in the lane and follow instructions. Please never step out of your car and walk on the expressway, as it is very dangerous.

To keep you safe from collision by following vehicles, avoid the bar and go through paying attention to following vehicles etc. Contact the expressway company that manages the ETC lane from a safe place where you are allowed to park and follow instructions.

8. Please re-set when there are any changes.

It is necessary to re-set your in-vehicle equipment when you move the equipment to another vehicle, change license plates, reconfigure to tow vehicles, etc. or change the registration information, etc. Please consult a nearby set-up shop.
