Tanaka: I am repairing and reinforcing various bridges throughout the year, but in this intensive construction, the floor slab * of Kaminagafusabashi, located slightly west of Hachioji IC, (Syoban) "will be replaced. In this work, the floor slab that was found to be damaged during inspections, etc., is cut with a large cutter, removed, and then replaced with a new concrete slab. Chuo Expressway 40 years after its opening. Although we have been performing partial repairs up to now, this is the first time that we have taken the drastic measure of “replacement of floor slabs” at the Hachioji Conservation and Service Center.
* Floor slab: A floor board (Yukaita) used to transmit the weight of vehicles passing over the bridge to the bridge girder and the pier.

Yoshikawa: I am responsible for pavement repairs, guardrails, and sign replacement. Even if you say that the pavement is damaged, there are various situations such as "watachi" and "cracks", so the most appropriate repair method is selected for each. This time, we plan to replace aging guardrails with safer reinforced guardrails at eight median strips in the section, for a total of 2.5 km.

How do you prepare for intensive work?

Tanaka: It is not an exaggeration to say that the preparation for the intensive work of the following year will start from the day that the intensive work is completed every year. For repairs and repairs, plans are made based on the results of inspections of structures. In formulating the intensive construction plan, we thoroughly analyze the traffic volume and traffic congestion during the period, the effect of the construction, etc., and draw up the menu and schedule while referring to the opinions and requests received from customers. Is reflected.

Yoshikawa: The section targeted for construction this time is an area where there are many residents living next to each other, so we have tried to minimize the impact on the surrounding area as much as possible. For example, we make a detailed construction plan that considers everyone along the railway line, for example, so that noisy construction is not performed late in the night. In addition, before the construction starts, we will explain to the people along the railway via handbills that indicate the details of the construction, the time zone, and inquiries, so that we can understand the concentrated construction.

What do you keep in mind during the two-week construction period?

Tanaka: In intensive construction, various constructions are performed simultaneously in a wide section, so if each work is not completed at the designated time, other constructions will be affected. "Safety" is the basis of these congested constructions as planned and the success of intensive construction. Through pre-training for traffic safety personnel and safety guidance during construction, we will complete the construction without any accidents, and we will give maximum consideration to the safety of our customers.

Yoshikawa: Intensive construction is a long-lasting place for two weeks, so I pay attention to physical condition management. We, of course, supervise the work, but we are working to create an efficient work schedule and system so that the construction companies who are in charge of the work at the site can maintain good conditions.

Tell us about your role in the 3-Year Plan for Improving Safety.

Tanaka: One of the concrete initiatives of the "3-Year Plan for Improving Safety" is "Development of human resources to support safety". I would like to pass on what I have learned from my seniors and the knowledge and skills I have learned and gained in many fields to my juniors who will support the next era. I also believe that my mission is to steadily implement the annual plan of the “3-Year Plan for Improving Safety” on site.

Yoshikawa: We believe that these three years will test the true value of our employees at NEXCO CENTRAL Group to see how we can regain trust in the Expressway through steady implementation of the 3-Year Plan for Improving Safety. Originally, I wanted to help people and society through highly public work, so I feel very rewarding to be involved in this field now. I will fulfill my responsibilities with the awareness that all my work is part of the “3-Year Plan for Improving Safety”.

Is there anything you want to tell drivers who use Chuo Expressway Expressway?

Yoshikawa: Traffic congestion is expected during the intensive construction period, so please check the traffic congestion forecast and required time information on our dedicated website for intensive construction before going out. You can also search for the estimated travel time and the current travel time, so you can use it as a reference to consider a good travel plan such as "use a detour" or "delay the departure time".

Tanaka and Yoshikawa: We believe that performing the necessary construction steadily and maintaining a healthy condition are the first steps to keeping Chuo Expressway safe. In order to continue to be a Expressway that can be used with peace of mind, we, NEXCO CENTRAL Group employees will work on intensive construction with every effort. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers and residents living along the railway, but we ask for your understanding and cooperation.
